In 2011, Viennese coffeehouse culture was declared intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
In Vienna, the tradition of drinking coffee dates back to the Second Turkish Siege around 1683. As the Turks retreated, they left behind many treasures, including coffee, which quickly became a beloved beverage, especially enjoyed in original Viennese "Kaffeehäusern". During the imperial Biedermeier era around 1828, numerous coffeehouses were opened. Many of these places still reflect the splendor of times past, adorned with velvet and silver, preserving the elegance of yersteryear.
Since ancient times, painters, poets, philosophers, and musicians have spent their days working and hanging out at their favorite coffeehouse. People read the paper, enjoyed their coffee, and watched the city with its colorful characters. The world outside has changed, and coffee has become a global trend product. But the old spirit of Viennese Bohemia lives on in Vienna's traditional coffeehouses. And not only UNESCO, but also our Viennese Bieder & Maier coffee, are paying tribute to this century-old culture.
