At Bieder & Maier, quality is of the utmost importance when it comes to our beans, which is why sustainability is at the heart of all our efforts. From sourcing ethically grown beans to implementing eco-friendly practices, our commitment to the environment and communities is firm.
With our partners, the EFICO Foundation and Nzatu, we support sustainable, social, and fair farming practices. And take just as much care in our roasting process.
Water is a valuable resource. That’s why we employ water-saving technologies that reduce consumption by up to 20% and regularly maintain them to prevent leaks.
To minimize our ecological footprint, we use energy-efficient roasting machines and process burners that reduce consumption by up to 20%.
We minimize waste and maximize recycling by sending a large portion of our waste for processing.
Soon, we will be working with local service providers who deliver exclusively using electric vehicles. And of course, our endeavor to optimize energy-efficient and climate-friendly measures in all areas continues day by day.
Through training and education programs, sustainable income increases, resilience to climate change, infrastructure support, and natural resource protection, we work to positively impact coffee farmers' livelihoods, prosperity, and the environment.
We support local and non-profit organizations and help to promote young people by collaborating with local schools and universities to provide educational and internship opportunities.
Furthermore, we offer continuing education and development opportunities through our partners, including regular training sessions and workshops, as well as a health program that includes annual health check-ups and healthcare services.
Another important task in this regard, is to ensure that children and young women grow up in a protected environment and receive an adequate education.
We support a regenerative agriculture model aimed at sustainability, without impacting natural resources and preserving wildlife habitats. We focus on training and supporting the capabilities of small and medium-sized businesses involved in coffee bean production.
Our coffee is produced using regenerative, organic agricultural practices. This includes pollination by biologically diverse trees and flowers, as well as agroforestry practices such as windbreaks and alley cropping, intercropping, crop rotation, and crop diversity.
Furthermore, we promote sustainable soil management, which includes reduced tillage, soil cover, and methods to increase soil organic carbon. We also support farmer-managed natural regeneration.
Our long-term goal by 2040 is to support farmers along the value chain to transition to regenerative practices. Even a 50% adoption of regenerative agriculture could lead to:
• 20% reduction in soil erosion,
• up to 60% increase in water infiltration rates,
• 24% increase in nitrogen content,
• 20% increase in carbon content or higher (soil is the second-largest carbon sink after the oceans).
We are active in our commitment to the principles of the UN Global Compact and to the Sustainable Development Goals.
As an organic certified company, we are proud to be part of the organic movement.
The ethical foundations of our coffee production revolve around fair trade practices, sustainable farming methods, and the welfare of farmers and laborers. By prioritizing transparency, environmental stewardship, and equitable compensation, the coffee industry can contribute to the well-being of communities while minimizing ecological impact.
