Therefore, in 2011, the Viennese art of coffee was declared intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

In 1828 – during the imperial Biedermeier era – numerous Viennese coffeehouses opened their doors and became global pioneers of "Coffee Culture." The period from 1800 to 1900 is often referred to as "The Golden Age of Coffee," with up to 600 coffeehouses in Vienna.
